Harryhausen 90th BD fan tributes: Nick Hilligoss behind the scenes

June 8, 2010

For the past several months, there has been buzz of Ray Harryhausen’s 90th birthday Stop Motion short tributes by fans and stop motionists. I believe AnimateClay.com is maybe involved but I’m still confused because Stop Motion Magazine also,  I think was doing or sponsoring an ‘Uncle Ray’ tribute but I think that is a separate event.  You can read about our Stop Mo mini-controversy at this Stop Motion forum topic.

An unsung hero, creative talent,  Nick Hilligoss (headquartered in Australia),  is working on a mini Stop Motion short  tribute and apparently, a behind the scenes has been posted at his Youtube channel for a few months but I missed it. I just watched it. Looks like Nick’s ‘Uncle Ray’ animated short tribute is based on the classic ‘7th Voyage of Sinbad’ classic! The above clip is a time lapse of Nick doing a build-up puppet fabrication of a stop motion puppet dragon head/neck, then at very end,  you will see a quick micro-teaser. Don’t blink because you might miss it!

  1. Marc says:

Hey Lio, we’re doing a live broadcast and will show all animated video tributes on the live show on June 29th. We’ll have Ron Cole as a guest on the show and will be talking about Rays films. Ray will also get a DVD of the show and the videos that we play.

Stop Motion Magazine is doing their own thing. John was going to be a part of what we were doing, but he backed out. He claimed legal/timing issues were to blame.

    Thanks for the mention LIO!
That dragon is from my Stopmotion Magazine Promo, for the Uncle Ray birthday issue. There is another timelapse of building the set at my Youtube channel.
That tribute is shot, and Brett McCoy (Idragosani) has done the music – it’s only waiting for the cover graphics of the June issue of SMM so I can incorporate those and post the video. I think John Ikuma is running late with this issue – too many paying jobs getting in the way.
I’m also about half way through animating a completely different Uncle Ray tribute to be part of the Animate Clay event, along with several others. Just wait until you see what Ron Cole is doing for that!
