SMW Special Effects Notes: Former ‘Kerner Optical’ resurrected as ‘32Ten Studios’

January 19, 2012

To refresh your memories,  this  past  SMW News story,  ’Industrial Light & Magic’s … ‘Kerner Optical’ closes its doors‘. The brand new, just started Practical Special Visual FX studio will be in San Rafael, California and I think near or at the same location as the defunct, formerly know as Kerner Optical. This will be a lean machine operation and will be employee controlled with minimal bureaucratic overhead (aks ‘the suits’).

What SUCKS  here in the San Francisco Bay Area … almost zero, zilch, nada, resources with regards to good of Traditional and Practical Special Effects … no studios, services and such. Instead, in general, it’s all HIGH TECHY environment around here, and with regards to ’special effects’, of course it’s mouse clicking CGI up the ad nauseum wah-zoo :x . No variety, choices or options for production work here. Sometimes this makes me wish to hang-out in Southern California, Los Angeles area but that is another issue of mixed feelings. You know, L.A., an interesting place to visit, BUT! ;)

Since 32Ten Studio a practical effects facility start-up, I wonder if they would consider Stop Motion Animation? You know,  part of their repertoire  of services to clients. Could be some work there especially commercial advertisement. Anyway best wishes to 32Ten Studios and I hope they can succeed in this new venture.

  1. Nice blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog shine. Please let me know where you got your design. Thanks a lot

Noted, and passed along. Stopmotion _is_ in the plan as long as advertisers and filmmakers still wish to embrace it. 32Ten has a variety of services, including a CG dept to support puppeteering work.

    Thanks for your input.

Yeah …. the type of special FX work that the original ILM Model & Creature Shop did, before ILM dumped those depts & went all CGI. Kerner tried to keep it going but of course folded & now reborn as 32Ten.Those large scale practical FX which you say not as exciting, does has its place but perhaps other practical fx facilities such as in southern California are more specialized and can do those kind of fx.

Hopefully 32Ten can focus what the former Model/Creature shop did, in addition expand more into ‘animatronics’. Today even just basic rod/cable bunraku live puppetry style fx, using the power of green screen composting techniques, which allows the digital removal of the puppeteers in post, has turbo charged puppetry special fx, giving it more more freedom, flexibility & believability. As I stated before, also maybe consider offering stop motion animation fx services. Phil Tippett is close neighbor to 32Ten & likely knows the people in this new start-up. I think, Phil still has lots of his ol school stop motion rigs, gear, machine shop, stages/tables, lights, etc. and of course, the ‘knowledge expertise’. A resource 32Ten can tap into. Anybody reading this that knows any of 32Ten crew and/or Phil …. pass this on to them :D

One can only hope that the practical effects that will be produced will be of the type we admire… miniatures & puppets. What I mean is that ‘practical effects’ can also be just stuff like high speed photography of milk being poured into a bowl for breakfast cereal ads, raw footage of explosions or lots of expensive Hollywood actors flying around on wires in front of a giant blue screen… none of which gets me terribly excited.
