Mainstream deeper into B-Movie Genre: ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ (2011)

July 21, 2011

The B-Movie flicks have always been around and of course this genre has ventured into the big time, obscenely costly mainstream major movies. Stop Motion master, Ray Harryhausen probably helped contributed some with the Harryhausen/Schneer fantasy films which somewhat became a commercial sucess. Then we got ‘Star Wars’ which gave the genre a further bigger push into mainstream tinsel town.

Although Cowboys & Aliens has no Stop Motion special effects, just by the title, one would think this could have been produced by a Roger Corman or maybe Brett Piper would have been involved with? They say ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ is based on a comic/graphic novel. So, guess who is behind this flick? Steven Speilberg & Ron Howard are the producers and you got a few semi-A List actors Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford starring in it. The title of movie ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ sounds incredulously bizarre, similar to titles of low budget flicks, like Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (starring the all grown up Debbie Gibson :P ) and plethora of other similarly wildly titled low budget B-Movies.

Another important symbolic statement thing (to me) about this movie …. the director of Cowboys & Aliens, Jon Favreau, did NOT want this to be in 3D Stereo. I give big thumbs up props to him refusing 3D Stereo! People want fun quick entertainment escapism and IMO, 3D Stereo does not necessarily enhance it & and you cannot just apply it to any movie. 3D Stereo if over used like anything else, can get old real fast. Hollywood aka ‘The Suits’ known for copycating and abusing, to excess. For me, High Definition resolution for home viewing is plenty enough ‘experience enhancement’ without the distracting 3D Stereo gimmick.  Who wants to see ‘When Harry Met Sally’ chick flicks in 3D Stereo? Also,  Western movies in 3D would be STUPID and also a distraction. Think … the cult classic,  ’The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly’ in 3D Stereo? Are you NUTS?? … but I digress :D

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in 3-D… hmm…

Anyone remember “Comin’ at Ya!”, the Italian 3D flick that (re)started the brief 3D revival in the 80s? Oh sí! E ’stato molto buono!

There was also another Sy-Fy film where a bunch of giant copperhead snakes invaded another western town. Lame acting. And even lamer CGI.

Stan, you’re right! Quick lookup …

There was a movie on the SCI-FI channel a couple months ago that was the same thing…A western town with aliens that were like giant spidery things that invaded-the cowboys had to figure out how to kill them. So, this is sort of a dollar short so to speak.

Hey look at that, Harrison is wearing both the original Han Solo and Indiana Jones costumes at the same time! :P
