A Stop Motion Works 2011 New Years

December 31, 2010

I do not have anything profound to say or rant about. Everyone and the mass communication media doing their roles as pundits, prognosticators, visionary observator experts with their plethora of predictions, foreseeing trends, or whatever. Maybe 2011 will be a little better but we really do not know.  All we can do is hope, but more importantly be pro-active in your life in trying to make positive change for ALL (do something!). I can tirade profusely on the big picture scheme of things happening here in USA and the world economic and societal disturbances going on but this maybe is not the place and hence, I shall censor myself!

Where is my H. G. Wells, Victorian Era (they now call it Steampunk)  Time Machine? Return to the past, I want. It felt like a more comfortable slower pace back then and not so chaotic helter skelter stressful rushed like today. Only one thing I can predict for sure for this New Years 2010 to 2011 transition….. I am revisting my Ray Harryhausen Legendary Monster Series: 3 Worlds of Gulliver, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Sinbad & the Eye of the Tiger, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and Jason & the Argonauts. Escape from the you know what ‘out there’. Repeating to myself …. “there is no place like ‘try to live life one frame at a time’, there is no place like, ‘try to live life one frame at a time’, there is no place like …..”

Addendum: A bit of trivia only relevant to us die-hard Stop Motioners ….. In the past Ray Harryhausen has definitely said “We don’t call them Monsters, we call them Creatures!” So, some front office ‘Suits’ in charge of the above Dvd series marketing, calls it, “…. Legendary Monster Series?” What the Frig?? Totally counter to Uncle Ray’s philosophy or his definition of his past, now iconic, puppet character animated special effects works. I know where he is coming from …. ‘Monster’ perhaps connotes something negative, horrific, bloody, or not family entertainment. Likely, if  ’Uncle Ray’ found out about the title or if he knows already, he could not do anything about it. The ‘Suits’ in control.  More appropriate (per the Stop Motion Master’s wishes) to title it “…. Legendary Creature Series“.

So, where does “Earth Vs The Flying Saucers” fit into the above equation? I’d go with Monster.

Hmmm …. I kind of went off on a brief ZEN-like contemplative mode null but many of you do the same privately in your thoughts, especially around the symbolic New Years period.

@ Marc_H – Another 2009 year such as Coraline and Mr. Fox? It’s all fine and great that Stop Motion makes it into mainstream but I always remind people ….. do not judge Stop Motion’s popularity by the ‘mainstream’ movie business. There are other emerging outlets & venues for Stop Motion Animation.

Monsters verses Creatures …. In hindsight, I suppose it’s a matter of how you choose to interpret. Meaning of words can be debateable. Ray’s animated works were mostly non-human and portrayed variety of fantasy and otherworldly forms and including existing creature/animal life forms. A ‘Monster’ could be thought of as gigantic or more sized closer to human scale. Sometimes I equate Monster with something that is violent, evil, brutality, etc.. Revisiting some of Ray Harryhausen’s classics this past weekend ….. some of his ‘creatures’ do display some violent behaviors but it’s minimal and not explicit like today’s modern flicks.

I wonder if we’ll be getting another year like 2009 in animation any time soon.
I like that Ray calls his creations ‘creatures’ rather than ‘monsters’. “Monster” calls up images of godzilla in my mind, Ray had all sorts of sizes, shapes and stories.
