Nick Hilligoss – Stop Motion in the Land of OZ

December 14, 2011

This SMW News post is maybe for the more die-hard stop motioners who have networked & communicated on the internet, well before facebook-faceschmook, twitter-schwitter, youtube-youschmube, ad infinitum. The name Nick Hilligoss is well known amongst the inner core of Stop Moes …. an unsung artist & talent residing in Land of Oz aka Australia. If you are curious, do an internet search of ‘Nick Hilligoss’ name. At the old stop motion website/messageboard (founder Anthony Scott) Nick has been a constant & reliable presence there …. commenting, giving feedback and generously providing advice, tips, techniques, to anyone who asks. Others have at times abandoned the messageboard but not Nick …. like a rock, a figurehead you can rely on.

Anyway, those that know of or heard of Nick Hilligoss may be curious to see & hear him. Most of his interaction with the public has been via the ‘written word’ on the internet and plenty of photos of him. Here he is in the almost flesh … talking, breathing, blinking, gesticulating, etc …

The above looks like was around 2008 year. His hair & beard is whiter now ;) I wish the interviewer was more experienced … you know, not knowing how to work the microphone! As you can see/hear …. Nick is soft-spoken and not the deep Gandalf-like thundering voice that you might have expected? Nicks hair/beard though, is now as white as Gandalf’s  Nick is still very much in the business and a Freelance Artist/Talent for hire. His skill-sets go beyond stop motion animation as he is an eclectic craftsman/artist in props & puppets fabrication, sculpting & character design, miniatures, model-making.

  1. Ron Cole says:

I never made the connection till just now but, finally seeing Nick in an ‘animated form’ made me realize how much of an Obi Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness years) he is! :)

  2. Great post! Nick is a talent and inspiration to animators all over the world. Love his style and his animations.

    Thanks for posting this.
